Gloria Jean Monroe was born on July 29, 1948, in Meridian, Mississippi, to Lewis and Bobbie Jean Beddingfield. At a young age, Gloria lost her father, and her mother later married Archie Henry.
Before her senior year of high school, Gloria’s family moved to Martin, Tennessee, where she attended Martin High School. During her senior year, she met and fell in love with Joe Douglas “Dougie” Monroe. They were married in June of 1968 and shared nearly 58 happy years together.
Doug and Gloria were blessed with two children, Michael (Mia) Monroe and Melissa (Tony) Greer.
Gloria dedicated 37 years of service to Martin Medical Center, where she worked faithfully and built many lasting friendships over the years. Her strong work ethic, caring spirit, and dedication touched the lives of many both inside and outside of the workplace.
Throughout her life, Gloria was known for her many gifts and talents. She was especially loved for her baking—particularly her famous pound cake—along with her sewing skills and creativity. Long before it was trendy, Gloria had a porch goose dressed in handmade outfits she lovingly created herself. She was also known for her extensive collection of cookbooks and treasured trinkets. Gloria found great joy in giving thoughtful gifts, always remembering the little things people loved and surprising them with something special. In her free-time, Gloria loved working in the yard, going to the nursery for flowers, and caring for them.
Gloria was a devoted Christian. She and Doug were faithfully known for arriving at church thirty minutes early every Wednesday and Sunday. She loved her family deeply, loved people generously, and loved the Lord with all her heart.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Joe Douglas Monroe; her son, Michael (Mia) Monroe; her daughter, Melissa (Tony) Greer; her half-sister, Jennifer Pigue; her step-sister, Betty Ann Chandler, and sister-in-law, Faye Beddingfield.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jordan Monroe; Kyndall (Austin) Matheny; Cole Monroe; Jay Monroe; Zac (Bre) Branson; Alex (Hailey) Branson; MaKena Greer; Jacob (Brady) Greer; Kimberly (Dylan) Nanney; Kelsey (Dylan) Taylor; and Jessica Greer. She is also lovingly remembered by her fourteen great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Gloria was preceded in death by her father, Lewis Beddingfield; her stepfather, Archie Henry; her mother, Bobbie Henry; and her brother, John Beddingfield.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the Martin Church of Christ. The family will welcome visitors from 9:00–11:00 a.m., with the service to follow immediately afterward.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Cassandra Granger, Gloria’s niece, and Kimberly Nanney, her granddaughter, for the loving care they provided during Gloria’s final months. They would also like to thank all friends and family for the love, prayers, food, and support shown during this time.
