Gwendolyn Armour Obituary

Mrs. Gwendolyn Mays Armour, age 93 of Greenfield, TN, passed away from this earth to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Diversicare in Martin.

She is affectionately known to all as Mama Gwen. Mama Gwen was born August 27, 1930, in Jackson, TN, to the late Ernest Mays and Florie Baggerly Mays.

She married the late Robert Ladell Armour, Sr. on August 3, 1946. She served by his side not only as a minister's wife, but also as a secretary for more than 50 years. In the late sixties and seventies, she could be found working in Belk's department store in Union City and the Youth Center.

While in good health, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends on Kentucky Lake, boating and entertaining. Mama Gwen was certainly no stranger to the local gymnasium and ball parks where she lovingly cheered on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved by them and all their teammates.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 25 at 2p.m. at Greenfield First Baptist Church, Greenfield, TN, where she was a member. Visitation will be held from 11a.m. until the time of her service. James H. Hazlewood will officiate with burial to follow at Obion County Memorial Gardens in Union City.

Pallbearers will be Reed Wright, Matt Scates, Phillip Scates, Rhett Armour, Mike Armour, Grady Stafford, Landon Brock, and Ronnie Fortner. The honorary pallbearer will be Cody Armour.

Other than her aunts and husband, Mrs. Armour was preceded in death by her daughter, Delores Armour Wright, her son-in-law, Phillip Ray Wright, and her sisters Nina Jean mays, Martha Wilson, and Annette McClendon.

Mama Gwen is survived by one sister, Sharon (Ben) Garcia (California); one son Bobby (Ann) Armour of Union City, grandsons Brent (Sherrie) Wright of Greenfield, Mike (Mary) Armour of Kenton, Rhett (April) Armour of Milan, and Cody Armour of Union City; granddaughter Beth (Trent) Scates of Greenfield; and daughter-in-law Susan Armour of Union City; along with numerous great grandchildren and two very special great-great-grandaughters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Greenfield First Baptist Church.
