Rodney "Doc" Thomsen age 75 of Dresden, TN, passed away peacefully at his home in Dresden on January 18, 2025. He was born on October 8, 1949 in Jackson, TN, to VC Thomsen and Grace Ruth McAlexander. He leaves behind caregivers Jeremy and LeeAnn McCoy, and several special friends Cody, Kaylee, and Karson McCoy along with Betty Eakes, Josh Sills, Cole McCoy, Kate Sills, Joe Duck, Russ Finney, Payton Williams, Jason Morris, and Stan Christisen.
Rodney “Doc” Thomsen was a member of the first UTM Rodeo “Club” while a student at UTM, graduating Cum Laude in 1971. He continued studying Agriculture at UTK receiving a Masters in Ag Education and his Ph.D. as the youngest ever in Ag Econ. In 1975 he returned to UTM to run the Ag Business Department and became a UTM Rodeo “Club” and later Team Sponsor for 23 years. Thomsen was instrumental in development of the Ag Pavilion. In 1976 he moved to Dresden where he raised, trained, and rode Racking Horses. As a Showman in Equine Event Sports he has become a nationally recognized sportsman. From the 70s until Present Doc has numerous Reserve World Grand Champion and World Grand Champion titles. As recent as 2019 his horse Grand Slam won the World Grand Champion, Flat Shod. So numerous are his awards and titles he has to refer to pictures of he and his horses to recall the titles. Thomsen has served on the Racking Horse Breeders Association Board of Directors, Judges Committee for Racking Horse Breeders Association, Judged Sporting Events all over the United States and has Judged the Racking Horse World Champion Celebration. 1967-1971 UTM Student. 1975 Return to UTM with Ph.D. to oversee the UTM Ag Business 1975-Present remining in Weakley County for last
