Thelma Dean Hutcheson McCollum passed away November 23, 2025 from a form of cancer. She was born July 23, 1944 in Hamilton, AL. After graduating high school, she attended Business School, and receive a Secretarial Dipolma.
Dean as everyone called her, married Dallas Gene McCollum in 1964. They moved to Chicago where she worked at World Book Encyclopedia as a secretary. Steven and Michael were born soon after.
Dean and Gene moved to Greenfield in 1977. After having several jobs, she decided to go on the truck with Gene as team drivers for Akin and Porter Produce. Her nickname from her grandfather was 'Mutt' which also became her CB handle.
Dean never feared a cop, as everyone knew she drove fast and to get out of her way. She may have been short, but that never stopped her.
Dean was so excited when she became a grandmother to Brooklyn and Tyler. She was patiently waiting on a Great Grand baby to arrive, she was also very proud of Tyler who is going to graduate from high school.
Dean is survived by two sons, Steven (Yelene) of Rutherford, and Michael (Tammy) of Martin, grand daugther Brooklyn Ross(Nick) with baby on the way and grandson Tyler McCollum. She also leaves behind sisters Gail Burns of Birmingham, AL, June Cox (Jimmy) of Hamilton, AL, Briana Shirley (Allen) of Guin, AL, Cheryl Birdyshaw (Wayne) of Florence, AL; along with many nieces and nephews. She had many friends from church, on the road, and neighbors that would check on her.
She is preceded in death by her husband Dallas Gene McCollum, and parents Robert William 'Bob' and Alice Hutcheson.
In Leiu of Flowers all donations can be made to the American Caner Society of St. Jude in her honor. She will have a burial in Hamilton, AL.
Memorial Service for Thelma Dean McCollum will be held Monday December 1, 2025 at 1 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Visitation will begin Monday morning at 10 a.m. and go until time of her service.
